Cubicle Chronicles: Productivity and motivational tips for inside sales warriors. By Josiane Feigon.

Are you the last one standing?

I always make fun of my friend Stu who has never been great at finding a new job. He is the type that hangs on for dear life when he is employed- you know that type? They are the last ones standing even after the movers have come in to pick up the fax machines and file cabinets. I don’t make fun of Stu anymore because in today’s economy, holding on to your job is a great skill.

It’s not cool to be the first one to bolt when things look uncertain because where will you really go? It’s pretty obvious there are more people than positions available these days so it’s in your best interest to sit tight.

But if you manage to make it through the first riff, the second round of layoffs, the third, you might be one of the last standing survivors. So what is it about your longevity that keeps you employed?  Obviously you are highly esteemed so what is your secret to your long-lasting employment. I have a few thoughts:

1. You are well trusted- you are responsible and others can easily confide in you.

2. You are flexible- you manage to adjust with every change without copping an attitude about it.

3. You don’t take things personally- you are mature and understand the bigger picture.

4. You focus on issues you can control and don’t waste time on what you can control

5. Your are always looking for shorter and faster solutions- it’s cool to be frugal

6. Your skill set is extremely diverse- you learn quick and can pick up other job functions

7. You work smart and hard- people always see you are busy working

8. You are not scared, fearful or panicked- your calm nature is inspiring

9. You have money in reserves- whether your spouse has a job or you have a great savings account, you have funds you can tap into if need be.

10. You have been here before.

What about you, do you hope to be the last one standing in your company?
