I am so glad I am not Christina Aguilera today. Poor woman totally butchered the lyrics to the National Anthem at yesterday’s Superbowl.
Last night, as my friend decided to sing me all the lyrics, I realized that Christina’s not alone. Just in case you, like me, forgot the lyrics:
“Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light. What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?”
The worst part is not just her goof, but the viral focus of bad news and how fast it travels. But yesterday’s disaster was out of control. The twitterspere hashtags of #NationalAnthem and #Christina Aquilera were going crazy. Her YouTube video has already received 188K views, and there are 26 million items on this is a Google search.
It’s the same in sales — we all know that unhappy customers immediately tell 10 people of their bad experience. Today, bad news not only travels fast but it’s permanent — it lives forever online. You could almost say it carries a grudge and never forgets.
