In the January 11th Time Magazine issue, Amanda Ripley writes a great column titled, Please Remain Standing, which points out how passengers are not helpless and how many have successfully averted potential terrorist attacks by taking matters in their own hands. Our hero, Dutch filmmaker Jasper Schuringa led the effort to subdue the recent Christmas bomber, Abdulmuttallab. This piece is important in reinforcing the power the people have in coming together to support, protect and take action for the common good- they get more accomplished.
Sue Connelly is one smart lady, a former SGI employee, she started KitList in 1997 as an email list to keep in touch and send job leads to friends who had been laid off Silicon Graphics. This list is filled with marketing, sales, tech opportunities in the Silicon Valley and today has grown to include over 64,000 subscribers. I subsribe to her list and stay informed with what companies are doing.
This entire week, Sue has requested we support the goal of the Kitlist which is for everyone to do their part in helping friends or family with leads on new opportunities. For five days, every person on the KIT List does just ONE thing each day for a friend to help with his or her job search. With over 64,000 people, we’ll generate 320,000 Pay it Forward actions.
And today is the first day, check out her blog at www.KITlist.wordpress.com and through KIT List emails, giving ideas each day for what you can do to help a friend find a job. People can share their ideas and results via the comments section, too.
Here is my action list for today:
1. I have 4 friends currently looking for opportunities that I will suggest the Kitlist to and also refer them to openings
2. I am dedicating my blog post about it and ask for everyone to retweet this message
3. I will give away one autographed copy of my book, Smart Selling on the Phone and Online to anyone who follows up on a KITlist opportunity.
In this fragile and social economy, it’s all about partnering with people who you know and who know others. Please support this effort this week and spread the word.

Dear Josiane,
Great stuff!!
As the (very) old saying goes, “Litera Scripta Manet”– The written word endures!
As a Sales Manager here in North Carolina, I want to share a great tool that I use constantly in the recognition category. This website (and others) are filled with so many great ideas and quotes, and I want to be able to share these with the employees at my company.
When it’s time to recognize someone for their performance, I take one of these quotes (I keep a long, ongoing list), and rather than giving them a standard old plaque (never again!), I put the quote on a DYI – Design Your Inspiration from Successories, since they are customizable AND personalizable. They are handsomely framed and the photo choices are great. It’s made employee recognition much more meaningful AND appreciated. The website is http://www.dyi.successories.com Thanks again. Anne
Thanks Anne- great tool and I like your supportive and inspiring comment.
Dear Josiane,
Thank you. As a coach for executives, I find your motivational tips refreshing in sharpening my skills.
I agree, Sue Connelly is doing and has added so much value for the people in the valley. At every appropriate opportunity, I evangelize the KIT List and one of my international business development colleagues added himself to the list just last week.
In the spirit of Sue Connelly’s ‘paying it forward’, when approached in January by the organization, Women in the Boardroom, I initiated an effort to notify, through my connections, thousands of people about this event, but more importantly, enabled about two dozen women to attend at no charge. It was a great networking and knowledge-sharing conference at the Hotel Sofitel.
I look forward to keeping in touch.
