There’s nothing like a good ol’ garage sale to bring out the bargaining spirit in people. I come from a long lineage of merchants so selling/negotiating/bargaining is in my blood. The process is the most exciting part of it - the general act of asking for money, negotiating, agreeing or walking away is all part of the dance.
I am proud of my kick-ass garage sale this weekend and I watched my entire block come alive. Perhaps my years of working retail kicked in and I decided to prepare and merchandise everything so it almost looked like you were walking into a used store with interesting collectibles. I spiced it up with music and there was a constant buzz of people coming around to buy/sell/negotiate and hang out.
Sales is about human behavior- it’s about helping people buy. People walked in wanting to find something to buy and eager to set their own price for what they found. The cool thing about this exchange is the seller and the buyer both get to informally meet somewhere along the way and both walk away with something they are happy about.
Except nobody wanted to buy my shoes-
It’s this creative spirit that dominates in this grim economic climate- it’s time to get creative and forget the “no budget” catch phrase. Buyers are tired of losing control to huge increases and paying out when so little is coming in. It’s time to creatively sell and not accept the “frozen budget” response.
