Twittering and Growling Loud Thoughts

Was that your tummy growling? Anyone sitting next to me in a quite place will usually hear my digestion gurgling, growling and basically doing it’s thing. If I ignore it and look to the person next to me, they’ll hold their stomach and excuse themselves while I watch in quiet denial.

I hear that same growling on Twitter as I compare it to lots of brains’ gurgling outloud. As I’m building my followers and following numbers, I’ve noticed fewer people are following me then I’m following. Hey, isn’t that supposed to be the other way around?  In the last day, 4 people have decided my tweets just don’t cut it and have stopped following me around.

Be patient- I’m just finding my Twitter voice- it’s taking awhile. It was much easier several years ago when I started blogging. Since I kept a journal for years, I could approach blogging the same way. When Twittering, one must take on two different personalities very seriously if they want to increase their followers base. who knows why someone wants to follow me around?

Maybe I’m too concerned about following others then maintaining my rankings. I’m fascinated by what some are tweeting about and lose myself following some around that are just a time sink.

Let’s talk about the Armstrongs- no relation to each other but have lots of followers:

Heather Armstrong @dooce has 379,716 followers but she only follows 101 people.

Lance Armstrong @lancearmstrong has 594,804 followers but he only follows 52 people.

It is wise to spend more time building your value as an alpha tweeter than getting distracted following others. Besides, your reality gets distorted when you you follow others. It gives you a false sense of intimacy. When Lance tweets about his broken collarbone and I find myself checking out his x-rays I want to reply by asking him if we can meet for a quick ride in Italy before his race.

Build your loud thoughts or listen to mine.
