Cubicle Chronicles: Productivity and motivational tips for inside sales warriors. By Josiane Feigon.

When you can’t stand being next to…

My spin on the E.D. (Economic Downturn) is on how it impacts human behavior. Unfortunately, we’ve heard of too many stories lately where someone gets laid off, decides to shoot their entire family before shooting themselves. I’m not suggesting this is a solution to stress but it’s a fact that during uncertain economic times, anxiety and stress escalates at a rapid rate. The need for a healthy productive workplace is most important during times like these but what if this isn’t possible?

Most inside sales organizations are structured where team members share a large working space. They sit together in well arranged cubicles, and some have very little sound barriers. This means if you don’t like your neighbor, you not only have to look at them each day, but have to listen to their every call. The negativity surrounds you and spills through your cubicle making it most difficult to get along.

When we risk rejection in every call and email-this negativity can impact your day, productivity and your creativity. It’s also a lot easier to blame others for your shortcomings and face it, your neighbor is just your perfect target. Here are some potential solutions and tips for getting along:

1. I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore-  Peter Finch’s monologue in this classic 1976 movie as he encourages everyone stand up and shout out the window how they are “mad as hell.” YouTube Preview Image

2. Attitude Adjustment Time- Take a walk, talk with someone to try to understand what is the motivation behind the negativity. What is it about that manager, co-worker, colleague that is so annoying?

3. Don’t Pout- Let go, practice forgiveness as many studies prove when you let go and forgive, you heal faster.

4. Mediator with Memory- Have someone you trust help mediate a session for both of you and help get some thoughts out. This mediator must be a good paraphraser and help both of you feel heard.

5. Move- Recirculate the energy by trading places with someone so you have more space in between you and your neighbor.
