Cubicle Chronicles: Productivity and motivational tips for inside sales warriors. By Josiane Feigon.

What is your Why?

This economy has affected every choice we make on a daily basis. From the jobs we have to the friendships we maintain to what we have for dinner. We are living through times of heightened awareness of our surroundings and our values are challenged each day.

It’s a good thing because it forces us to really focus on the WHY? My sister shared with me a great idea her company had by asking each employee to post their Why? up in their work area. For some this may be easy and for others it may be a difficult excercise coming up with theirWhy? It’s your raison d’etre, who you are, your purpose, what feeds your soul and fuels your existence.

I agree with Seth Godin’s viewpoint when he says, “Don’t Try to Get a Job” but instead approach it the organic way by making a small contribution aligned with your raison d’etre and it all comes together.

I have a friend, Angela who was this high-powered executive working for a major Fortune 100 Corporation. Angela was among the walking wounded- she never looked happy when she walked into our Yoga class each week. She was stressed, angry, paranoid and could barely move or bend her body. Then one day, Angela showed up with a glowing smile on her face and bravely announced she had quit her job.

Weeks went by and Angela became restless and impatient to get back to work. She had some great skills and agreed to help the Yoga studio out with a few things.  So each week she spent about 4 hours in their office. She couldn’t believe how easy the work was and how much she was appreciated for doing what she loved. At first Angela was too embarassed to tell her friends she worked in a Yoga studio. ”You work where? A Yogurt Shop?” her immigrant parents asked. ”No, not a Yogurt Shop, a Yoga studio.” Angela proudly replied.

After a few months, Angela started putting more hours changing her status from part-time to full-time.  Something interesting started happening, Angela’s appearance was taking on major shifts.  Her eyes were brighter, she stood straighter, laughed more and her color came back to her cheekbones. Yesterday I ran into Angela in class and noticed her brilliant smile as she announced she had been asked to become a permanent full-time employee with benefits. Now you can see how your raison d’etre works?

What is your why?
